Plot Synopsis: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century #1 1910
"What Keeps Mankind Alive?" is written by Alan Moore with art by Kevin O'Neill. The League is back 20 years after its last incarnation. Once again, Mina Harker leads a team of plucky adventures against a plot to bring human civilization to ruin. On her team in this new century are Tom Carnacki, the famous ghost finder; the androgynous and immortal Orlando; the aristocratic cat burglar Raffles; and the adventurer Allan Quartermain, made young again and posing as his own son.

Acting upon a horrific dream in which Carnacki foresaw an evil cult make designs on the Throne of England, the team sets off to investigate the Satanist Oliver Haddo whom they believe is behind it all. Meanwhile, the daughter of the infamous pirate Captain Nemo runs away from her home and takes up a life at a seedy dockside pub in London. The indignities she suffers there and word of her father's death steel her resolve to take over the Nautilus and to use its terrible weaponry to wash away the scum of the London underworld. And to top it all off, it looks as if perhaps Jack the Ripper is back in business once more!
