Plot Synopsis: Green Lantern (1963) #23 1st appearance and origin of The Tattooed Man. "Threat of the Tattooed Man!" is drawn by Gil Kane. Witness the beginning of one of GL's strangest foes: a man who can make the paintings on his skin come alive! Sailor Abel Tarrant began his criminal career as a simple thief after leaving the life of the sea. In particular, Tarrant had his larcenous eye on the treasures of Baron Cranfield, an aristocrat for whom his parents had toiled as domestic servants. While in the midst of a robbery, Tarrant finds an odd mixture of chemicals splashed on the floor will become three-dimensional, fully functional versions of whatever he "draws" them to be. Using this strange new talent, Tarrant paints his body with an arsenal of weapons to use in his lawless pursuit. While overseeing the hanging of an oil painting of himself commissioned from a lovely young artist, Green Lantern has a run-in with the Tattooed Man. It ends badly, with GL being carried off unconscious by a monstrous hawk that had just moments ago been skin art. Somehow, the Emerald Gladiator must find a way to get past Tarrant's barrage of weird weapons and stop his crime spree. Next, Hal Jordan travels to a distant insect planet to aid a Grasshopper Green Lantern against an evil gang of wasps in "The Green Lantern Disasters!" (drawn by Kane).
