FROM BEYOND THE UNKNOWN (1969) #8 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: From Beyond the Unknown (1969) #8
In the post-Frederic Wertham (author of Seduction of the Innocent) days of the comic book industry in the 1950s, publishers who had been publicly rebuked for featuring gory scenes of torture, drug use and half-naked women in their magazines arguably overreacted by pumping out a bunch of non-violent (snore) pabulum. One could hardly blame them since Congress was breathing down their necks and threatening federal censorship but the resulting stories were stunningly bereft of any excitement.

This reprint series sought to pick up on the revived interest in science fiction by recycling some of the many stories created a decade earlier. Writer John Broome and artist Sy Barry weave a story of aliens concerned for Earth's health in "Mars On the Air." Two astronauts try to clear up confusion over who they are in the "Riddle of the Counterfeit Earthman" (written by Otto Binder with art by Gil Kane). Christopher Columbus, Cleopatra and Napoleon lend modern historians a hand "Across the Ages" (by Broome and artist Jerry Grandenetti).

Then, an invasion force is stopped by peaceful means (yawn) in "The Dreams of Doom" (by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino). A modern story by Denny O'Neil and artist Murphy Anderson injects some much-needed action in the book with "Earth Shall Not Die Part 2" and then we're back to ho-hum with the sedate story of a man who can see through walls (and complains about it). "The Incredible Eyes of Arthur Gail" is written by Edmond Hamilton and drawn by Sid Greene. Finally, bugs try to get their revenge on us hairless apes for keeping them down in "Meet Your Masters - the Ants" by writer Manny Rubin and artist Bob Oksner.
