Writer Morrison begins his epic 7-part saga pitting the heroes of Earth against the evil Gods of Apokolips in a conflagration that will change the DC Universe forever. It begins with the discovery by Metropolis Police Detective Turpin of the New God Orion, the victim of an apparent assassination. The Green Lantern Corps, the interstellar police force assigned to protect Earth as well as millions of other planets, investigates and judges it a clear case of deicide.

Turpin, meanwhile, seeks out the mysterious new Question, who hands over a clue to the location of several missing children the detective has been looking for. Seeking them out at the Dark Side Club, Turpin runs afoul of a macabre power he could not have anticipated and immediately he begins to transform into something powerfully evil. Elsewhere, the villain known as Libra offers the Secret Society of Super-Villains the chance to see their darkest fantasies come true. And to prove his power, Libra grants the wish of a second banana crook named the Human Flame: he murders the Martian Manhunter right before his eyes.
