FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) (#1-416) (MARVEL) #35 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Fantastic Four (1961) #35
First appearance of Dragon Man. "Calamity on Campus!" is written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby and Chic Stone. Reed Richards returns to lecture at his alma mater State University and brings the rest of the FF along for the ride. So much has changed for Reed and his friends since he and Ben Grimm graduated from these hallowed halls. But along with their marvelous powers, the FF have also gained an army of fans due to their heroic acts in defense of mankind. State University underclassmen crowd around the Fantasticar as the fearsome foursome arrive. And quick encounters with Professor Charles Xavier, Scott (Cyclops) Summers and Peter (Spider-Man) Parker firmly establish State University within the Marvel Universe.

However, it's the bizarre creation of Prof. Gilbert that is center stage in our drama. An enormous Dragon Man created out of unliving matter designed to be more powerful than the Fantastic Four seems an odd choice for a research project. But the FF chalk it up to academic curiosity until Diablo, the alchemist, makes the scene. Having escaped from his earthen prison where the FF left him in far-off Transylvania, the colorful foe makes his way West to the campus of State University by magical means. There, he brings the Dragon Man to life and sets him against the FF. A terrific battle in the air and on the ground ensues, interrupting Reed's speech. But Dragon Man is part Godzilla and part King Kong (especially the part that falls for beautiful women), so the Invisible Girl is able to calm the beast. Diablo takes his concentration off controlling the monster for a second, leading to both their dooms as Dragon Man turns on the man who gave him life.
