E-MAN (FIRST) (1983) #20 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: E-Man (FIR) #20
"If You Knew Herb" is written and drawn by Joe Staton and Rick Burchett. The mid-1980s were filled with computer-phobia driven by the virus-like growth in popularity of the personal computer. Computer games were just the precursor to the exploding information age and here, writer/artist Joe Staton grabs onto those urban worries with gusto. It begins with our hero, Alec, zipping the curvaceous Nova into her fishnet and leotard stage outfit rather clumsily. As Alec, he can seemingly do nothing right but as E-Man, he's a champion to everyone on the street. That includes the mysterious Herb who seems fixated on finding someone called Dot. When E-Man rescues Herb from traffic, he uncovers a mystery.

E-Man lends a hand to his oddly stiff new companion, finally coming across Dot, a pretty young computer programmer at an office building downtown. That's when Herb shows his true nature as he absconds with the woman by leaping miles in a single bound. In hot pursuit, E-Man and Teddy fly to a local college and team up with Donald, the nephew of the intrepid P.I. Michael Mauser, who is already on the case. There they find Dot held captive by H.E.R.B., a computer program dubbed the Human Expansion Response Basic, who has fallen in love with his programmer/creator. Meanwhile, P.I. Mauser must solve a murder-mystery surrounding a long-dead horror film star that's seemingly come back to life!
