CAPTAIN MARVEL (1968) (#1-62) (MARVEL) #5 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Captain Marvel #5
In the late '60s when America was tearing itself apart in a desperate attempt to reconcile its political and military heritage with its burgeoning role as a global leader, comics too began to reflect a growing understanding of just what it meant to live a world dominated by the U.S.A. Into that changing mind-set, comes the Metazoid at first blush yet another villain created by the "evil empire" U.S.S.R. to steal nuclear secrets from the military. But on deeper examination, the Metazoid appears as much a victim as is his intended kidnaping target.

Unfortunately for the Metazoid, his target is rocket scientist Walt Lawson the human guise of Captain Marvel! While his Kree superiors, including Ronan the Accuser and the conniving Yon-Rogg, watch on, Captain Marvel battles to save a country that would imprison him if he were unmasked. All the while, the Metazoid changes and evolves further and further away from the man he longs to become once again. Both are pawns of militaristic systems that have spun out of control.

Arnold Drake made a career of revealing the humanity in super-heroes and fantastic villains who by all outward appearances were judged inhuman. Among the characters he gave words to were Deadman and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Capturing the spirit of the noble outsider, struggling to find his or her place in a cruel and rejecting world, Drake paints a portrait here of a captain of the conquering Kree becoming more and more a mortal man. Meanwhile, penciler Don Heck, a mainstay of the Silver Age of Marvel Comics, cast broad and bold strokes in vibrant, pop-art panels.
