CAPTAIN MARVEL (1968) (#1-62) (MARVEL) #23 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Captain Marvel #23
Radiation played a key role in the creation of many of Marvel's greatest heroes of the Silver Age. Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil and the Hulk all owe their powers to the unleashed power of the atom. However, by the early '70s with the growing environmental movement, writers and readers began to suspect as the public did that there was a darker side to nuclear power. That darker side in this comic is called by the name Megaton.

When a hapless scientist investigates a power drain affecting a remote generating facility, he comes across a Kree outpost and its alien energies flood over him. Horribly, he is transformed in both body and mind into Megaton, a rampaging behemoth bent on world domination. Captain Marvel, now humanity's self-appointed protector, must stop him from completing his mad quest. But can he succeed, with his symbiotic partner Rick Jones increasingly resenting their dual existence? Can he defeat Megaton before he reaches critical mass?

Wayne Boring, the legendary Superman artist of the '50s, again pens a red and blue clad champion in this rare guest appearance. Boring's expressive physical style captures the ebb and flow of a clash of super-beings while scribe Marv Wolfman once again bottles the essence of what makes a hero heroic.
