CAPTAIN ACTION (1968) #1 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Captain Action (1968) #1
"Origin of Captain Action!" is written by Jim Shooter with pencils by Wally Wood. Premiere issue. Guest-starring Superman. One of the first action figure/comic book tie-ins. The Captain Action toy came with various costumes and masks that would allow the hero to become many different adventurers, from Superman to Batman to the Phantom to Captain America and Tarzan. In this issue, we learn the origin of Captain Action and how he could draw upon so many different powers in his quest for justice. The story begins in the mountains of central Spain, where two archeologists (Prof. Clive Arno and a man known as simply Krellik) discover a city of ruins from far-flung corners of the world. Amid the relics, they find a chest of coins, each inscribed with the face of a god from a different pantheon, suggesting representatives from a dozen worldwide cultures converged here in ancient times.

Upon shining one of the coins, Arno gains superhuman strength and surmises that each of the coins can convey a different super-power related to the deity they depict. Placing the artifacts under an ionizing radiation device, Arno and Krellik are suddenly hurled into the past where they observe a gathering of the gods, led by Odin. These supernatural beings plot to leave Earth but agree to leave behind tokens of their might; the coins Arno and Krellik found. After they return to the present, the greedy and power-mad Krellik tries to take all the coins for himself but is burned by the attempt. Only a worthy champion may use their power, Arno warns him. But Krellik later finds a previously undiscovered coin, left by an evil god, which gives him the power of magic. When Arno plans to launch a career as a costumed super-hero upon returning to America, Krellik steals his identity and ruins Captain Action's reputation before it begins. Only with the help of Superman, Arno's son Carl (who becomes Action Boy) and their pet panther Khem, can Captain Action save the day!
