ADVENTURE COMICS (1938) (#32-503) (DC) #345 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Adventure Comics #345
Featuring Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes. "The Execution of Matter-Eater Lad!" Prisoners of the intergalactic criminal Nardo and his super-strong android duplicates, the Legion is powerless to stop his mad war on the law. Put to work breaking rocks and denied the most basic of rights, the teen champions seem destined to die in this Super Stalag of space. Although Brainiac 5 is elected escape officer, Matter-Eater Lad and his new pal, Blockade Boy, hatch a plan of their own to gain freedom. Using his super-strong teeth and digestive powers, Matter-Eater Lad chews a tunnel out of the complex. But when the pair emerges into the daylight, they see only another prison complex, this one housing the female Legionnaires who accompanied them on this mission. Then Nardo shows up, tipped about their attempt, and blasts at them with his nuclear power. Only the last-second sacrifice of Blockade Boy, who can become a solid steel barricade, spares Matter-Eater Lad's life.

Taken back into custody, the Legionnaire is marked for public execution as an example to all others who dream of escape. Now knowing that their escape plans are being monitored by a traitor in their midst, Brainiac 5 builds a device for listening on the informant's conversations with prison warden Nardo. Discovering it was Weight Wizard who betrayed them, the teen super-heroes turn on the turncoat. Using his ability to increase or reduce his weight, the frightened boy becomes super-light and bounces away. Shunned by his fellow prisoners and hoping to somehow redeem himself, Weight Wizard bounces right over the fence of the prison. Nardo and his androids pursue the boy into the surrounding swamp, where he's eaten by a giant poisonous lily. Invisible Kid tries hiding from Nardo and his guards but is seen by Nardo's third eye (a radar device) and is shrunk to the size of an ant as punishment. Then Saturn Girl, Light Lass and Duo Damsel succeed in turning local animals on their captors. Brainiac 5 manages, with Element Lad's help, to neutralize Nardo's nuclear rays and turn his androids against him. And Superboy, Ultra Boy and Mon-El show up to finish the job and stop Matter-Eater Lad's date with a firing squad. Whew!
